Bio:

I pored over the photos in Look and Life magazines when I was a child. While I don’t remember the stories, I can still recall many of the photos. The ability to capture a moment that speaks to a viewer intrigued me then, and still does today.

For me, photography is a form of relaxation.  I can spend hours wandering around, trying to capture the beauty that surrounds me. On the technical side, I’m learning how to use Lightroom effectively.  Recently, I’ve become interested in Luminar and Aurora. I try to spend a few hours each week dedicated to reading photography books, photographing whatever is around me, experimenting with the post-processing software, and making notes – or as I call it ‘camera school’. The best part is trying to put into practice what I’m learning

  • How would you describe your photographic style?
I think my style is best described as ‘evolving’. I started by trying to capture the antics of the birds and squirrels in my garden.  That progressed to photographing the garden itself.  While I still am fond of photographing flowers, especially roses, I’ve spent hours in photographing the wildlife around me wherever I go.  The more I’m out there trying to capture the beauty and power of nature, the more I want to improve.
  • Which photographer is your biggest inspiration?
I’ve learned an incredible amount from the many talented members of the Ajax Photography Club. I’m inspired by the photographers who present each month at the club, especially Christoph Fischer, Don Komarechka, and André Gallant.
  • How long have you been interested in photography?
I began to take a serious interest in photography when I retired in January 2012.  I joined the APC in 2015.  That was definitely one of the best decisions I’ve made. I’ve taken many of the classes and participated in the photo clinics and competitions.  There is always something to learn and keep me interested.
  • What was your first camera?
My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic. I was more fascinated by the flash cubes than by the actual camera. Later I had a Minolta 35mm, which, regrettably, I never learned to use properly.  I don’t think I ever took it off the automatic or program mode. Afterward, I had a few digital point and shoot cameras.  When I got my first DSLR in 2014, I promised myself I would learn to use it properly.  I still struggle with manual mode, but as I practice more, I’m getting better at it.
  • What is your dream photo trip?
There are so many places in the world I want to visit.  South America has always been a dream destination.  A South African safari would definitely be high on my list.  And ever since I studied ancient history in high school, I’ve wanted to visit the ancient sites of Egypt. Later this year, Walter, my husband, and I will be crossing the Panama Canal.  I’m really looking forward to that.
