This month, our featured photographer is APC member, Nina Kirienko.
Bio:
After 39 years of working for a living, I retired and went back to school full-time, graduating in 2016 from the Digital Photography Program at Durham College. I’m now the owner of Nina Kirienko Photography. This is sheer pleasure, not work.
I’ve also had the great joy of being a member of the Ajax Photography Club for three seasons. I wholeheartedly support the club’s focus on personal growth and development. I love sharing knowledge and new discoveries with my colleagues at the club.
In terms of photographic interests, I am especially drawn to fine art, architecture, landscape and event photography.
Fine art photography lets me play with light and shadow, revealing textures, lines and detail that are often overlooked. Everyday objects can be magical. I don’t often photograph people, but when I do, I try to discover how the human form can be presented as fine art. It’s amazing how intriguing an arm, shoulder or back can be.
I pretty much equate natural and man-made structures in terms of artistic interest. Whether a landscape or a building, you can often find a story of survival, creative imagination (God’s or man’s) or all of the above. I like the challenge of portraying these compelling but monolithic structures in artistic ways.
In terms of events, I really enjoy photographing community events that showcase the positive side of human nature and what we can accomplish together. That’s another reason I really enjoy my membership at the APC. The club’s partnership with the Town of Ajax is fabulous.
Overall, I have an infinite and insatiable curiosity about the world. I’m not happy unless I’m learning.
- How would you describe your photography style?
The best label is “fine art photographer”. This is a catch-all label. Basically, it means that I photograph almost anything, but try to present the result in a different, artistic way. I’m still learning how to do that. It’s so much fun. - Which photographer is your biggest inspiration?
There is a whole collection of artists known as Fine Art Architectural photographers. Of that group, my biggest influence is Joel Tjintjelaar. - How long have you been interested in photography?
Since I was a teen. But the demands of growing up, work and life put it on hold. Not any more. - What was your first camera?
My first serious camera was a Yashica TL Electro, purchased in the mid-1970’s. I still have it. - What is your dream photo trip?
I would love to spend a year photographing the architecture and landscapes of Canada. Every little nook and cranny. I love this country.
