This month, our featured photographer is Ella Jeans.
Bio:
I was fortunate to grow up in a home where both parents loved wildlife and the great outdoors. Growing up in that environment built a very strong foundation rooted in nature.
I was a child when my mother first let me use her camera and I was hooked. At eighteen, I bought my first camera and realized I needed help to understand it so I signed up at Humber College and took photography at night.
For my 19th birthday, my mom offered me an incredible present … a trip to Frobisher Bay in Nunavut, Canada, or a zoom lens.
I have yet to see the awe-inspiring land of the midnight sun.
I started out photographing race cars at Mosport, Shannonville and the Molson Indy (as it was called way back then). I was a mechanic and an amateur race car driver for years. Just as I was about to race professionally, I was involved in a serious car accident (on the highway of all places) that left me permanently disabled.
For many years I put down my camera and thought I was done, but my deep love of nature and the experiences I had are what got me back in to photography. It became a powerful healing tool on my road to where I am today.
Nature is where I find my deepest sense of peace, stillness, joy and healing.
- How would you describe your photography style?
I would say I’m a Nature Photographer, I’ll photography anything in nature. While I’ve tried other forms of photography, Nature is what feeds my soul. - Which photographer is your biggest inspiration?
My cousin Sandra Strangemore. As teenagers, she was well rooted in photography and took me on a few trips and taught me a lot about it. - How long have you been interested in photography?
Since I was 8 or 9. My passion has always leaned towards Black & White. - What was your first camera?
Yashika FX3 35mm - What is your dream photo trip?
The Galapagos Islands and Scotland.
