APC March Meeting – Landscape and wildlife photographer, Andrew McLachlan

The Ajax Photography Club is proud to welcome landscape and wildlife photographer, Andrew McLachlan as the guest speaker for our March members meeting.

Tuesday, MARCH 27th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Ajax Community Centre – HMS Room
75 Centennial Rd., Ajax, ON
Doors open at 6:30 PM

Andrew McLachlan is a freelance photographer / writer from Ontario, Canada. For as long as he can recall, he has been fascinated by the natural world. His photography became an extension of that love. If he did not own a camera, he would still be found hiking along dense boreal forest trails, canoeing through wetlands, and observing all nature has to offer. His extensive travels throughout Ontario have resulted in a large, diverse collection of images that feature landscapes and the flora and fauna of the province. In addition to photographing Ontario’s natural world his adventures have taken him throughout the Caribbean and most recently the Amazonian rainforest of Peru. Andrew is also skilled at creating artistic renditions using a combination of in-camera techniques and Photoshop plug-ins to achieve desired results.\

Andrew’s first eBook A Photographer’s Guide to the Ontario Landscape is the first ever-comprehensive guide to photographing Ontario’s vast and varied landscape. There are many outstanding photo destinations throughout the province. In this e-book he has covered many of the best locations; from the remote Abitibi Canyon to Point Pelee, the Ottawa Valley to the Algoma Highlands and beyond, in an easy-to-read, easy-to-follow guide, complete with driving directions to each destination. When he first began photographing the province’s landscape he wished that there had been a resource such as this available at the time. Having spent countless hours searching the internet, studying road maps, and meandering down backroads in hopes of finding inspiring landscapes to photograph, Andrew chose to write this guide to simplify the process for other photographers. While this eBook is about photographing the Ontario landscape, it also has dozens of tips scattered throughout that will guide you to creating stunning landscape imagery of your own, wherever you may live. Andrew has offered this eBook to APC members at a special discount rate of $20. (Cash only, please)

Please note: We will also have results of the March Photo Clinic after the presentation. (approx. 25 mins)

Looking for some photographic inspiration? Well, look no further than the current members of the Ajax Photography Club. Each month a different APC member will be featured and we will provide a glimpse into their photographic life.

This month, the featured photographer is APC member , Carol Painter.

Bio:

Carol has been a member of the Ajax Photography Club since 2014. She is very active in the club and has also voluteered her time co-organizing our fall retreat to Sumac.

  • How would you describe your photographic style?
I really don’t have a style per say, I enjoy spending time with Nature and my camera. I like to be creative with nature.
  • Which photographer is your biggest inspiration?
I don’t have a specific photograher. I do get a lot of inspiration from fellow club members as well as from members from my other photography group.
  • How long have you been interested in photography?
I have always enjoyed photography, especially when I had children. I have tons of photos of my kids growing up, but they are just pictures. I really started getting more into photography about 8 years ago. I still have a long way to go and lots to learn.
  • What was your first camera?
My first camera was a film Instamatic, when it broke I didn’t have one for years. When I met my husband he had a Canon film 35mm, which I took over. I then got a Canon Power-shot which was pretty good. But as I grew I knew I wanted more so I purchased a Canon T2i and grew to a Canon 70d.  Still waiting for my dream camera, but all in time.
  • What is your dream photo trip?
My dream trip would definitely be to Alaska or Iceland.

You can view more of Carol’s work on our Meetup page.

APC February Meeting – Nature and wildlife photographer, David Sweeney

The Ajax Photography Club is proud to welcome Nature and wildlife photographer, David Sweeney as the guest speaker for our February members meeting.

Tuesday, february 27th, 2018 at 7:00 PM
Ajax Community Centre – HMS Room
75 Centennial Rd., Ajax, ON
Doors open at 6:30 PM

David Sweeney was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Growing up in the east end of the city. He has always had a love for nature and natural things.

My introduction to nature photography was through my involvement in the Beach Photo Club and a number of weekend outings to Algonquin that I participated on. I was in love with nature, especially water and waterfalls.

In 2004 after meeting my now wife, I was introduced to Haliburton Forest & Wildlife Reserve and the Wolf Centre. My first visit to the wolf centre was a memorable occasion. The pack was strong and large with more than 7 or 8 adults. I quickly took a fond liking to Ebony and Manitou whom were two most impressive wolves.

I have followed the progression of the pack since those year’s, and have been snapping images quietly since that time.
