This month, our featured photographer is Tim Thorington.
Bio:
My journey with photography began in my early thirties (feels like yesterday) when a good friend of mine encouraged me to buy a 35 mm camera and join him from time to time on his weekend outings. After only a few outings I had the bug. I started to spend more and more time shooting either with my friend or by myself. I learned the fundamental principles of photography by reading magazines and books and spending time practicing out in the field. Back then image processing was very expensive so I really had to think twice before taking a shot. I also found myself keeping notes so that I could remember what my camera settings were when the slide came back from processing about a week later. Today it is so much easier as all of that information (metadata) is captured right on the camera with each photo.
So the things that I have learned over the years have evolved with patience, some hard work, a lot of fun, persistence and technology in ways that I could never have imagined so many years ago. That evolution has brought me here today, some 30 years later.
Although I enjoy all aspects and types of photography, my passion lies in the great outdoors. Outdoor photography marries the best of what I truly enjoy about nature with outdoor life.
- How would you describe your photography style?
I would have to say that I am well focussed (pun) on Outdoor Photography - Which photographer is your biggest inspiration?
There is no one or even two photographers that really inspire me. I love reading photography magazines and books and even some of the art books that you might see from people like Robert Bateman. It is the subject itself be it a bird, a flower, a butterfly or even a beautiful scene to name but a few that truly inspires me to try and capture the beauty. - How long have you been interested in photography?
For over 30 years. - What was your first camera?
It was a 35 mm Minolta. That being said it could just as easily have been a Nikon or a Canon. I believe that it truly is the photographer that takes the picture. - What is your dream photo trip?
As I have really taken a liking to birds over the past few years I would have to say a photography outing to Costa Rica would be absolutely wonderful.
