APC Featured Photographer of the Month – Peter Watson

The APC is excited to kickoff a new feature showcasing the work of some of our talented members. Each month, a different member will be featured and we will provide a glimpse into their photographic life.

This month, our featured photographer is Peter Watson.

Bio:
Ajax, Ontario is my base for exploring photography and multi-media. My passion for photography includes everything from fashion, models, people, nature, racing, travel, landscape and the surreal moments in life. Seeing the world through photography has raised my awareness of what true beauty is and helped raise my social consciousness.

My photographic roots originated in film at an early age and transitioned into a serious hobby when I got my first 35mm camera. The journey continued with photographic education at Sheridan College and expanding my visual horizons through global travel for the next 20 years. My photographic journey continued through the Ryerson C.E. Image Arts program. Formal education in photography has pushed my creativity and boundaries.

My early influences are Diane Arbus, Eric Kroll, Henry Cartier Bresson, Galen Rowell, Helmut Newton and Richard Avedon. My interest in these photographers echoes my interest in the golden days of cinematography from the 40’s through the late 60’s.

• How would you describe your photography style?
I am very much drawn to patterns and symmetry in my work. This is predominantly what I look for in fashion. In landscape I am particularly attracted to black and white. This is due to my early experiences with a black and white darkroom when I was a teenager. In sports I tend to amplify motion through shutter speed to create a heightened sense of realism and almost a painterly like effect.

• How long have you been interested in photography?
I first got into photography was I was 12 years old. 39 years later I am still taking pictures. Took a brief hiatus in the 80’s when film was starting to fade out.

• What was your first camera?
In order: 1. Kodak 110 camera 2. Fujuica ST 601 35 mm 3. Nikon 601 35 mm film 4. Canon A60 digital 5. Nikon D80 6. Nikon D300 7. Nikon D800 8. Canon EOSM 9. Nikon D810

• What  is  your  dream  photo  trip?
Definitely Antarctica; although Africa is a close runner up.
