APC Welcomes Award-Winning Toronto Star photojournalist Steve Russell – An Eye on Toronto

Steve Russell prides himself on being the eyes (and witness) to the events that affect Toronto, Ontario, and Canada, capturing moments that define the times.
Toronto Star photojournalist Steve Russell developed his love of photojournalism while living in South America reading Time magazine and National Geographic. Steve has been at the Toronto Star for almost 25 years and has covered the turning of the millennium in Tonga, six Olympic Games, Championship runs by the Toronto Raptors & Toronto FC, and way too many Toronto Maple Leaf first-round exits!
Star photographer Steve Russell is one of the winners of the National Pictures of the Year Awards. The News Photographers Association of Canada has awarded Russell with the best feature photo of the year.
Toronto Star photojournalist Steve Russell has won the best feature photo of the year by the News Photographers Association of Canada.
When taking his photos, Russell tries to “be a fly on the wall,” adding “I’m always trying to photograph people doing what they do. You can go and take a portrait of a person with a thing. However, you want a picture that shows them doing something active where there’s a greater chance that they forget that you are there.”
“It’s a behind-the-scenes photo that people love,” Russell said. “It’s really behind the scenes.”
